Instructions:
I used a 4" round box, but any size box can be used. Adjust the paper and styrofoam ball size accordingly and the steps are all the same. Put scrap paper over your workspace to protect it against paint and adhesive spills.
1. Trim a piece of patterned paper to about 4 1/2" x 12.
2. Stamp "Fairy Crossing" twice just below the middle of the paper using black ink. Set aside to dry.
3. When dry, adhere the paper to the side of the box using Mod Podge. Apply Mod Podge to the middle of the back of the paper and to the side of the box and unite the two. Leave the top and bottoms edges dry for now. Press the paper firmly against the box with the stamped saying more towards the bottom edge of the box. There should be paper overhanging the top and bottom edges. Smooth the paper with your fingers to work out air bubbles.
4. Using scissors, make a cut from the paper edge to the top of the box (in the overhanging paper on the top) about every 1". Repeat on the bottom overhanging edge.
5. Apply Mod Podge to the back of the newly cut paper on the top, about 1/3 of the way around. Also apply the adhesive to the inside of the box in the corresponding area.
6. Push the paper down over the edge to the inside of the box. Repeat until you've gone around the entire top. The object is to cover the top edge of the box and prevent wrinkles in the paper.
7. Repeat with the bottom edge.
8. Cover the entire outside of the paper with Mod Podge to provide a clear coat and protection for the paper. Be sure to go up and over the edges to also coat the paper in those areas. Set aside to dry.
9. Let's work on the lid now. Coat the rim with embossing ink then with embossing powder. Shake off the excess and heat to set the powder.
10. Repeat until you have the desired thickness of powder. Don't be afraid to layer powders to achieve the effect and coloring you want also.
11. Repeat this process for the top of the lid, ink, add powder, shake then heat.
12. Also layer powders here if desired. Make sure the edge is covered and colored too with embossing powder.
13. When the lid has the desired layers and colors, make sure it is cooled and dry.
14. Lay the lid on the work surface, top up. Ink the fairy stamp with embossing ink and remove from the acrylic mount. Gently take the stamp and place on the lid, holding the stamp in place and pressing at the same time. The embossing powder may not be completely level, so the stamp needs to conform to the possible uneven box lid.
15. After firmly pressing the stamp to the box lid, remove the stamp and set aside to clean.
16. Add black embossing powder to the box lid, shake off any excess and heat to emboss. Don't excessively heat the image as it will lose definition and disturb the previously embossed colors. Set aside to cool.
17. Paint the inside bottom and inside sides of the box with the Lumiere paint and foam brush, only up to the paper.
18. Paint the inside of the lid also, when ready.
19. Trim a piece of felt to approximately 6" square.
20. Trace the bottom of the box on another piece of felt and trim about 1/4" inside that line to create a circle for the bottom.
21. Cut a 4" round styrofoam ball in half and carve a small divot in the rounded side for the tooth to sit in.
22. Add some hot glue to the inside of that divot and press the middle of the felt square down into the divot immediately.
23. Turning the 1/2 ball upside down on your work space, add hot glue to a small portion of the side of the ball and pull the felt against it to secure. Repeat all the way around the ball until the felt is secured along the sides.
24. Fold the felt over the flat bottom of the ball and secure with hot glue. Set aside.
25. Add a piece of ribbon to the inside of the box to cover the edge of the paper using hot glue. This will make a nice transition between the paper and paint.
26. Add the felt covered ball to the bottom of the box using hot glue.
27. Add the felt circle to the outside bottom of the box using hot glue.
28. Add rhinestones to the edge of the lid using clear liquid adhesive.
You're done! I hope you have fun with this project! You'll be able to whip these out in no time after the first one.
